The Ethics of Pharmacy

As part of the quid pro quo for certain legal prerogatives granted to his profession by society, the practitioner has accepted responsibilities for an ethical standard of conduct going beyond comformity with law or technical skill. This has seemed particularly needful in health professions, such as pharmacy, where the services meet one of mankind’s basic needs and where the patient often has no realible means of judging the standard of service for himself.

Ethics and responsibility are expressions that should characterize professional practice in many sectors of society. Pharmacy, being a high technology activity, is just an example of a field where (responsible) decisions about medicines and health care are closely connected to private and public life. Responsible behavior can only be demonstrated when the moral basis, the values on which decisions are taken, is clear and accepted by society as a whole. The basis for responsible action in medicine is still considered to connect with the Hippocratic Oath. But this code has no clear philosophical basis, other than the fact that it was recognized by the inner circle of physicians. Modern dilemmas like the role of technology, public costs, the definition of life,
genetic engineering and assisted suicide ask for an approach that is rational, based on philosophical ideas and understandable and accepted by the public. From the work of 20th century philosophers like Rawls, Nussbaum and Sen, essential values can be abstracted, which apply to health and health care. Although the plurality of human beings makes it complicated to translate such values into general rules of conduct, this article presents a model for responsible behavior, based on these values. It appears that responsibility includes the obligation to interact with a patient to an extent in which the values of self-determination, compassion and justice have real significance for the parties involved. This responsibility calls for ('Aristotelian') experience and practical wisdom and should be recognizable through guidelines and legislation.

In the code of ethics pharmacy , pharmacists have obligations , either in general , to patients , peers , or other health workers . These obligations will be done when the pharmacist is in the workplace . Recent government regulations , PP 51 of 2009 concerning Pharmaceutical Works , Article 25, paragraph 2 also supports the existence of the pharmacist in every pharmacy facilities , such as in pharmacies . Although the majority of the establishment of pharmacies , pharmacists work with investors , saying that the work is fully retained by the pharmacy pharmacist . Code of Conduct pharmacist Indonesia Article 3 : " Every pharmacist should always conduct their profession in accordance Indonesian Pharmacist competence and are able to prioritize and stick to humanitarian principles in carrying out its obligations " and chapter 9 : " A pharmacist in a pharmacy must do the work of the public interest and respect for Rights and patients and protect human beings " , explains the role of pharmacists in promoting patient safety to prevent medication errors . Pharmacists should always run a professional pharmacist competency standards that have been established and based on humanitarian principles . Ethically epistemological , pharmacists must be aware that he is not just working for himself but also for society .

In the code of conduct regarding the obligation to the patient that the pharmacist should be in the public interest and to respect and protect the Rights and patients with human beings . It shows that as a pharmacist should not only focus on self-interest , but more broadly to the benefit of patients to prevent medication errors , keep the safety of life of patients (patient safety ) and further improve the QoL ( quality of life of the patient ) . This can be done by continuing to improve competence . The government also has set the standard Ministry of Health Pharmaceutical Services in Pharmacy .
